Professor Terry J Daymond -Patron and Group Medical Adviser MB, FRCP, D Phys Med Consultant Rheumatologist -now retired from the NHS and working in the private sector Born in Wimbledon and attended school at Rutlish School, Merton. Entered Edinburgh University in 1961 and graduated as a doctor in 1967. House jobs in Kings Lynn where he met his wife. Spent one year in the Punjab, India as Acting Chief Medical Officer at a Mission Hospital. Returned to Kings Lynn as a Medical Registrar then to Norwich to commence training in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation. Senior Registrar at the RVI in Newcastle and appointed Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation at Sunderland in November 1979. Developed an interest in drug studies. Collaborated with the Sunderland University Pharmacy Department looking at pharmokinetics of drugs in arthritis. Has a keen interest in pain problems and Chronic Fatigue and is patron of the Arachnoiditis Trust, the Sunderland and South Tyneside ME/CFS Support group and is president of the local back care group. In 1990 he developed a service for Osteoporosis in Sunderland and headed the Echo campaign for a DEXA machine. In 1998 he was appointed a visiting Professor at Sunderland University. He established the Mobility Research Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital developing assessment for patients with Arthritis and assessment of joint fluid therapy for patients with Osteoarthritis. He is married with 4 children and two grandchildren. |

Professor Malcolm Hooper-Group Patron Professor Emeritus of Medicinal Chemistry, Sunderland University. I obtained the following degrees from the Faculty of Medicine, University of London, B.Pharm. (1956), Ph.D. (1959). By election I received C.Chem. MRIC in 1963. 1959: Appointed Lecturer in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy, Sunderland Technical College. Served on Committees of the Council for National Academic Awards, CNAA, World Health Organisation, Science and Engineering Research Council. Appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to the Gulf Veterans Association, GVA, and accepted by the Ministry of Defence as their nominee on the Independent Panel. Member of the support Group convened at the Royal British Legion and also a member of the Depleted Uranium (DU) Oversight Board, formed in 2001. My involvement with the GWVs brought contact with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, CFS/ME, and related disorders. Gulf War Illness/Syndrome, GWI/S, has much in common with CFS/ME this resulted in my becoming a Patron of the Sunderland and South Tyneside ME/CFS Support Group. Member of the Newcastle Research Group, which includes eminent physicians and scientists carrying out research into ME-CFS. Associated with the Autism Research Unit, University of Sunderland, for over 20 years. I have an active interest in environmental issues. I have a longstanding ministry as a Christian lay leader, preacher and teacher both locally, regionally and nationally. I served on the General Synod of the Church of England from 1970-1980. |
| Dr James Irving Spurr -Group Medical Adviser Dr Irving Spurr lives in Weardale with his wife Eileen and has a grown up family. He undertook his further education at Newcastle University gaining an MBBS in 1964 and has held a GMC Full Registration since 1965. He has had a varied career in medicine and has worked in a number of areas but the majority of his professional employment has been as a GP. GP Trainee scheme. Bishop Stortford 1965-67 Registrar in Acute Psychiatry. West Cumberland Hospital. Whitehaven. 1967-68 GP Principal. Brownhills. Staffordshire 1968-70 GP Principal. Weardale Practice. Co Durham Retired as a Principal in 1997 to work as a Non Principal, throughout Co Durham, until 2006. Dr Spurr has also gained valuable experience in the following areas, some of which are in a voluntary/honorary capacity Captain. 223 Field Ambulance [RAMC] TA 1974 – 1984 Trustee of The John Richardson Research Group 1985 – continuing Organizer of annual International Conferences in Tyneside, Cambridge and London. Funding of research into Enteroviral and Toxin mediated illnesses. Author of Website articles re “Enteroviral Myalgic Encephalomyelitis” and “The Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Dilemma”. Honorary Medical Advisor to Sunderland and South Tyneside ME/CFS Support Group from June 2010. Initiated ME/CFS clinic for NHS and Private referrals 1985 - continuing Since outset I have seen 1000 new patients of all age groups: diagnosed, treated and reviewed.
